Alaska / Power Outage
A widespread power outage impacted thousands of residents in Anchorage and the Matanuska-Susitna Borough on Monday morning, October 27, 2025. Utilities reported the outage was due to a load-shedding event, but power was quickly restored.
The power outage occurred around 9:40 AM AKDT, with both Chugach Electric and MEA reporting the load-shedding event on social media. Chugach Electric stated that the outage was caused by a loss of power generation, leading to cascading outages across their service territories. Power was restored to Chugach Electric customers by 10:15 AM, and MEA reported restoration by 10:41 AM. Homer Electric Association also restored power to its customers by 10:15 AM.
Load-shedding is implemented to stabilize the system during a power generation loss, preventing a larger and potentially more damaging event. It allows utilities to manage the situation and restore power in a controlled manner. The Anchorage School District reported that half of its schools experienced a power outage, but generators functioned properly.

Approximately 19,000 MEA customers and thousands of Chugach Electric customers were affected. Homer Electric Association reported around 9,400 customers were affected.
Power was restored to most customers within about an hour.
