Following a family tragedy, Li Fong (Ben Wang) relocates from Beijing to New York City with his mother (Ming-Na Wen). Despite his kung fu skills learned under Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), Li struggles with local bullies. When he decides to enter the challenging "Five Boroughs" karate tournament, Mr. Han realizes Li needs a different approach.
Enter Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio). Mr. Han travels to California to seek out the Miyagi-Do sensei, revealing a historical connection between their mentors. As Macchio puts it, they represent "Two branches, one tree." The goal is to combine Li's kung fu foundation with the principles of Miyagi-Do karate, creating a unique fighting style for the tournament.
The film is set roughly two years after the events of *Cobra Kai*, existing within the same universe but described by Macchio as a "different ecosystem." While exciting for fans, the trailer has sparked some debate. The plot points – a new kid moving, facing bullies tied to a love interest (Sadie Stanley), and entering a tournament – echo the original 1984 film, leading some to wonder if it's too repetitive. Questions also remain about how or if the extensive cast and storylines from *Cobra Kai* will be addressed.
