Machado, Merrill Honor Hitting Staff in Silver Slugger Ceremony

Before Saturday's game, Manny Machado and Jackson Merrill turned their Silver Slugger Award ceremony into a tribute to the San Diego Padres' hitting coaches. Instead of team executives, Machado requested the six-member hitting staff present the prestigious awards, a gesture lauded by manager Mike Shildt as 'absolute class.'

The move shone a light on the group credited with transforming the Padres' offense. For years, Petco Park was considered an offensive black hole, with the team never ranking in the top 10 league-wide in hitting metrics over a full season in the park's first 20 years. However, since hitting coach Victor Rodriguez and his team arrived before the 2024 season, San Diego's offense climbed to fifth according to wRC+.

Rodriguez attributes this success to a unified approach dubbed 'Petco Park hitting,' focusing on line drives suited to the ballpark, and consistent messaging from the entire staff. Machado praised their dedication, noting their late-night work analyzing upcoming pitchers. 'Everyone sees the home runs and the great things that happen on the ballfield. But there's a lot more that goes on behind the scenes that these guys don't really get noticed for,' Machado stated.

The presenters were symbolic: Morgan Burkhardt, who works closely with Machado, presented his award. Pat O’Sullivan, Merrill’s Single-A hitting coach, presented to Merrill, a moment Merrill called 'pretty sweet.' This recognition highlighted the often invisible, yet vital, work coaches put in daily.

It's an award given annually to the best offensive player at each position in both the American League and the National League of Major League Baseball, as determined by coaches and managers.

The staff includes hitting coach Victor Rodriguez, assistant hitting coaches Mike McCoy and Pat O’Sullivan, batting practice/hitting instructor Morgan Burkhardt, special assistant Allen Craig, and sports science director Nathan Landau.

Instead of team officials, the players specifically requested the hitting coaches, who work with them daily, present the awards to share the recognition.
