Yohel Pozo Called Up as Iván Herrera Suffers Knee Injury

After Iván Herrera suffered a knee injury during a game against the Red Sox, tests revealed a bone bruise that will keep him out for at least a month. In response, the Cardinals have promoted Yohel Pozo from their Triple-A affiliate in Memphis. Pozo, who last played in the majors in 2021 with the Texas Rangers, has been performing well in Triple-A, batting .333 with two home runs this season.

The Cardinals are hesitant to shift Willson Contreras back to catching duties, as they transitioned him to first base this season to enhance his health and availability. With Herrera sidelined, Pedro Pagés is expected to take on a more significant role, with Pozo providing additional support. The team is also keen on not rushing their younger catching prospects, such as Jimmy Crooks.

This situation presents an opportunity for Pozo to demonstrate his capabilities at the major league level. His previous MLB experience includes a .284 batting average in 21 games with the Rangers in 2021. His recent performance in Triple-A suggests he could be a valuable asset during Herrera's absence.
