St. Louis Region Rivers Face Flood Threat After Heavy Rainfall

The Meramec River is particularly vulnerable, with several communities along its banks facing moderate to major flood stages. Low-lying roads have been closed in St. Louis and Jefferson counties, including stretches of Meramec Bottom, Hawkins, and Butler Hill roads. State transportation workers have also closed Highway 141 under Interstate 44 in the Valley Park area. Jefferson County election authorities moved a polling place due to the flooding. The National Weather Service attributes the rising river levels to multiple rounds of heavy rainfall at the end of last week.

Eureka and Valley Park in Missouri, along the Meramec River, and New Athens and Vandalia in Illinois, on the Kaskaskia River, are currently at the highest risk.
