Rivian R2 Validation Testing and Prototype Details Emerge

The Rivian R2 aims to deliver the same experience as the R1 but at half the price. RJ Scaringe highlights the importance of "brand tonality," drawing inspiration from Apple's eco-system approach. The R2 is made of durable, sustainable materials and features big wheels and tires, with impressive approach and departure angles for off-roading.

The R2 is smaller and narrower than the R1, weighing 2,250kg. It has a unitary body, making it stiffer with a lower center of gravity. The battery pack is a structural member, enhancing crash absorption. The platform simplifies manufacturing with fewer ECUs and a "tree house" design, bundling ECUs and the battery management system into a single unit.

Charging from 10 to 80 percent should take under 30 minutes at up to 200kW. The R2 uses two permanent-magnet synchronous motors, with a total power output of 656bhp in the dual-motor version. A single-motor version is due in 2027, starting at $45k in the US.

The R2 has evolved headlights and a light bar. The badge in the front wing doubles as an indicator signal. The interior is similar to the R1 but with a reconfigured touchscreen and massive storage space. The R2 also introduces a "haptic halo wheel" for physical control over climate and audio settings.

The Rivian R2 is expected to start at around $45,000.

Rivian is aiming for a mid-2026 release.
