Yankees Option Luis Gil to Minors; Cade Winquest Makes Roster

The New York Yankees have decided to option right-hander Luis Gil to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to begin the 2026 season. This move is partly due to the team having four off days in the first 12 days of the season, allowing them to temporarily manage with a four-man rotation. Gil, the 2024 American League Rookie of the Year, will use this time in the minors to continue working on a regular rest schedule and refine his command.

In a corresponding move, the Yankees have added Rule 5 pick Cade Winquest to the roster. Winquest, who throws in the mid-90s, will provide the Yankees with a long relief option out of the bullpen. This marks a significant moment for the Yankees, as Winquest is the first Rule 5 Draft selection to make their roster since Brad Meyers in 2011 (Meyers was immediately put on the injured list), and the first to actually play a game since Josh Phelps in 2007.

Gil's demotion, while potentially disappointing for the young pitcher, allows him to maintain a starting pitcher's routine and be ready to rejoin the rotation when needed. Manager Aaron Boone has expressed confidence in Gil's potential and believes he will be an important part of the team later in the season. Winquest, on the other hand, has an opportunity to prove himself at the major league level and potentially become a valuable asset for the Yankees' pitching staff.
