Noelvi Marte's Struggles Diminish Reds' Return in Luis Castillo Trade

Four years after the trade that sent Luis Castillo to the Seattle Mariners, Noelvi Marte, who was a key piece in the deal for the Cincinnati Reds, is struggling to find his footing. Once ranked as MLB Pipeline's No. 11 prospect, Marte's performance has been inconsistent, and he is currently in a right field platoon with Will Benson, despite having a .566 OPS against left-handed pitchers.

Marte's struggles are compounded by an 80-game suspension he served for performance-enhancing drugs. While he showed promise in 2023, hitting .300 with an .856 OPS as late as August 24, his performance has since declined to a .187 average with 49 strikeouts in 37 games. With two minor league options remaining, a stint in Triple-A Louisville might benefit him.

Meanwhile, Luis Castillo has been a reliable pitcher for the Mariners. Although no longer the team's ace, he provides valuable innings, and his fastball velocity remains strong. As the Mariners prepare to face the Houston Astros, Castillo is scheduled to start against Lance McCullers. The Astros' pitching staff is currently facing challenges, with Tatsuya Imai undergoing medical evaluation and JP France being sent back to Sugar Land.

In their game against the Astros, the Mariners will have J.P. Crawford at the top of the lineup. Houston will have Yainer Diaz catching, Jose Altuve at second base, and Yordan Àlvarez as DH.

Marte is in a right field platoon, struggling to find consistent playing time and performance.
