Wade Miley Opts Out of Reds Deal, Seeks Starting Opportunity

Wade Miley, a 14-season MLB veteran, signed a minor league deal with the Reds in February with an opt-out clause if he wasn't added to the major league roster by June 1. Miley, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, made several rehab starts in the minors, but his performance was inconsistent. The Reds' current rotation and injuries to other pitchers factored into their decision to not offer Miley a starting role. Miley has a career 4.07 ERA and has been a reliable pitcher in the past, particularly from 2018-2023 where he posted a 3.43 ERA. Reds manager Terry Francona acknowledged Miley's desire to start and appreciated the organization's handling of the situation, allowing Miley to pursue opportunities where he can start. If Miley doesn't find a suitable offer, a return to the Reds on a new minor league contract remains a possibility.

Joe La Sorsa, another left-handed pitcher in the Reds organization, is also expected to exercise his upward mobility clause. La Sorsa has MLB experience with the Rays and Nationals and has shown increased velocity on his fastball. However, his stats in Triple-A have been pedestrian, and his future with the Reds remains uncertain.

He was seeking a starting opportunity, which the Reds couldn't provide at this time.
