Michigan AG Intervenes in Consumers Energy Rate Hike

The company highlights its commitment to delivering safe, reliable, and affordable energy. However, Nessel and advocacy groups argue that Consumers Energy and DTE have a pattern of including inappropriate costs in rate hike requests, such as private jet travel for executives. The Attorney General’s office will scrutinize the request to protect customers from corporate greed. Residents and advocacy groups have protested DTE Energy's request for a rate hike, and State Rep. Donavan McKinney, D-Detroit, has said the proposed hike is devastating for his constituents, many of whom already struggle to pay their bills. The Michigan League of Conservation Voters urges the public service commission to knock down the rate hikes. Alex Kellogg, with the league, said that bills are too damn high and that Consumers Energy and DTE are trying to raise energy bills by a combined amount of more than $1 billion dollars.

Consumers Energy is seeking an annual rate hike of $436 million.

If approved, the rate hike would take effect in May 2026.
