Hawaii Doctor Accused of Attempting to Murder Wife on Hiking Trail

The alleged attack occurred on Monday, March 24, 2025, on the Pali Puka Trail, an unofficial but popular path off the Pali Lookout on Oʻahu, known for its scenic views and dangerous, steep cliffs.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Arielle Konig told police her husband asked her to take a selfie near the cliff edge. When she refused due to safety concerns and started walking back, he allegedly pushed her into bushes, initiating a struggle. She claims he then struck her head with a rock approximately 10 times and smashed her face into the ground.

Critically, two hikers reportedly heard Arielle screaming, "Help! Help me!" One hiker witnessed Gerhardt Konig on top of his wife, hitting her head with a rock. Arielle allegedly told the hikers, "He is trying to kill me." The affidavit also states that Gerhardt Konig pulled out two syringes from his bag and attempted to inject his wife, but she managed to prevent him.

The witnesses called 911, and Gerhardt Konig fled the scene. He was apprehended later that day after a foot pursuit near the Pali Highway. Arielle was transported to Queens Medical Center in serious but stable condition with multiple lacerations to her head and face.

Gerhardt Konig, an anesthesiologist whose Hawaii medical license was obtained in September 2022, has had his medical staff privileges suspended at Maui Memorial Medical Center pending investigation. Friends expressed shock, with one setting up a GoFundMe page to support Arielle and her children during her recovery. Konig appeared in court on Thursday, March 27, with bail set at $5 million. A preliminary hearing is scheduled.

Gerhardt Konig, 46, is charged with second-degree attempted murder.

According to court documents, the attack allegedly began after his wife, Arielle Konig, 36, declined to take a selfie with him near the edge of a cliff on the Pali Puka Trail.

Two other hikers heard the victim's screams for help and intervened, witnessing part of the alleged assault and calling 911.

He is an anesthesiologist licensed in Hawaii, previously working as an independent contractor at Maui Memorial Medical Center. His privileges have been suspended pending investigation.
