Funding Dispute Between WCSD and NDE

The Washoe County School District is pursuing legal action against the Nevada Department of Education regarding the funding of a residential treatment program for a student with disabilities. The district argues that the state is obligated to cover the $582,000 cost, citing state administrative codes and $2 million in annual state funds allocated for extraordinary expenses for students with disabilities. The NDE has not commented on the matter, stating they don't have direct funding for the program and directing the district to another program that doesn't fund residential placements. WCSD says that the NDE spent less than $375,000 of the $2 million allocated in 2024.
