Hollywood Actors Back Human Consent Standard for AI Licensing

RSL Media's Human Consent Standard aims to solve the problem of AI systems using human expression, creative work, and likeness without explicit consent. The standard allows individuals to declare their AI permissions, functioning as a signal that machines can read.

The Human Consent Standard builds upon the existing RSL Standard, which launched previously to signal how AI systems use website content. While RSL applies to content at a specific URL, the Human Consent Standard applies to the underlying work, identity, character, or mark itself, wherever it appears.

In practice, AI systems will check declarations against a registry, which will launch in June. This registry will allow individuals to verify their identity and set permissions for the usage of their likeness and creative works. RSL Media will then translate these terms into signals that AI systems can read.

Cate Blanchett emphasizes that consent must be the first consideration in the expansion of AI technologies. Nikki Hexum, co-founder and CEO of RSL Media, notes that the right to decide whether AI can use your work or identity should not be reserved only for those who can afford lawyers or have large platforms.

It's a framework that allows individuals to control how AI systems use their likenesses and creative works.

It functions as a traffic light system, where AI usage can be permitted, conditionally permitted, or prohibited, based on user preferences.

The registry is scheduled to launch in June.

The initiative is supported by numerous Hollywood stars, including Cate Blanchett, George Clooney, Tom Hanks, and Meryl Streep, as well as organizations like Creative Artists Agency and the Music Artists Coalition.
