Mariah Carey Faces Renewed Lawsuit From Brother Over Memoir and Fan Video Allegations

The legal conflict stems from Mariah Carey's autobiography, "The Meaning of Mariah Carey," published in October 2020. Morgan Carey filed his initial lawsuit in 2021, claiming defamation, though most of his original points were dismissed.

The latest amended complaint, filed in March 2025, centers on a specific YouTube video created by a Mariah fan ("Lambily"). Morgan alleges this video, which uses Mariah's own audiobook narration in parts, is a targeted attack orchestrated by the singer herself. The video repeats serious accusations from the memoir:

Morgan's legal team counters these claims forcefully. They state he never hit Mariah, had no "life of crime," received no "hefty payout" from their father's insurance, and was never "scheming." Regarding the alleged violence towards his mother or an altercation with his father mentioned in the book (which reportedly required "twelve cops" to break up), Morgan argues his physical condition as a teen—including cerebral palsy and epilepsy—made such actions highly unlikely. His lawyers suggest these fabrications might aim to "vilify Morgan" or align with social movements.

The lawsuit claims tangible damages, citing a film project negotiation with Italian producer Francesco Pamphili that allegedly collapsed after the memoir's contents became public. Morgan states he has been unable to secure full-time employment since.

Legal proceedings are ongoing, with a deadline for depositions set for May 16, 2025, and discovery completion by June 30, 2025. The potential involvement of the Oprah Winfrey Network (due to Mariah's interviews promoting the book) adds another layer to the case. Tragically, the siblings' mother, Patricia, and sister, Alison, both passed away amidst the legal battle.
