Ruben Loftus-Cheek Undergoes Emergency Surgery Ahead of AC Milan's Napoli Clash

AC Milan's preparations for their Serie A clash with Napoli were disrupted when midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek fell ill at the team hotel overnight. Complaining of severe abdominal pains, the 29-year-old England international was promptly taken to a local hospital.

Doctors diagnosed acute appendicitis, necessitating immediate surgery. AC Milan later confirmed that Loftus-Cheek underwent a successful laparoscopic appendectomy performed by Professor Francesco Corcione and his team.

The timing was particularly unfortunate for both the player and the club. Loftus-Cheek had recently recovered from a muscle injury that had sidelined him since mid-December and had trained during the international break. He travelled with the squad to Naples and was widely tipped to start the match, especially with teammate Yunus Musah suspended. Instead, reports suggest Youssouf Fofana was likely to step into the midfield.

Loftus-Cheek joined AC Milan from his boyhood club Chelsea in the summer of 2023 for a reported fee of around £16 million. Despite fitness issues sometimes hampering his availability, he has made an impact for the Rossoneri. He previously made 155 appearances for Chelsea and earned 10 caps for England, including featuring in the 2018 World Cup squad. His recovery period from the appendectomy has not yet been specified.
