Chelsea and Arsenal Stage Comebacks to Set Up Blockbuster Women's Champions League Semi-Finals

Both Chelsea and Arsenal displayed incredible resilience to reach the Women's Champions League semi-finals. Arsenal kicked off the comeback trend, defeating Real Madrid 3-0 at the Emirates after losing the first leg 2-0. As noted by former player Gilly Flaherty, the Emirates atmosphere played a significant role: "When the crowd is there... they have this belief that they can beat anybody."

Just 24 hours later, Chelsea replicated the feat against domestic rivals Manchester City. Trailing 2-0 from the first leg, the Blues produced what defender Millie Bright called "a true Chelsea performance" at Stamford Bridge, scoring three first-half goals to win 3-0 and progress 3-2 on aggregate. Pundits highlighted Chelsea's relentless pressing and intensity from the start. "They were going in pairs, no one was pressing in isolation and they all knew what the game plan was," observed Gilly Flaherty.

Facing European Royalty

The reward for the English clubs is a semi-final lineup against the two most dominant teams in recent European history.

Chelsea vs Barcelona: This is the third year running these teams meet at this stage. Barcelona won the previous two encounters (2-1 agg in 2022/23, 2-1 agg in 2023/24) and also defeated Chelsea in the 2021 final (4-0). Barcelona, the current holders aiming for a title hat-trick, have reached five of the last six finals, winning three. They overcame Wolfsburg 10-2 on aggregate in the quarter-finals.

Arsenal vs Lyon: Arsenal face the competition's most successful club. Lyon have won a record eight titles and reached 11 finals. They defeated Arsenal 5-2 on aggregate in the 2010/11 semi-finals, although Arsenal secured a stunning 5-1 win away at Lyon in the 2022/23 group stage. Lyon dispatched Bayern Munich 6-1 on aggregate in their quarter-final.

Road to Lisbon

The semi-final first legs take place on April 19th (Arsenal vs Lyon) and 20th (Barcelona vs Chelsea), with the return legs on April 27th. The winners will contest the final at the Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon on May 24th, 2025.
