Each puzzle has 16 words divided into four categories.

The NYT Connections puzzle challenges players to identify relationships between seemingly disparate words. The Sports Edition adds a layer of sports knowledge to the mix. For October 14, 2025:

Yellow:: Move to Evade a Defender (DEKE, JUKE, SIDESTEP, SPIN)
Green:: Boston Sports Teams (BRUINS, PATRIOTS, RED SOX, REVOLUTION)
Blue:: Associated with Cal Ripken Jr. (8, IRON MAN, ORIOLES, STREAK)
Purple:: First Words of Winter Olympic Sports (ALPINE, FIGURE, NORDIC, SPEED)
