The Brief Tenure of William H. Lane

While the focus is on 2025, the Masters has a deep history. Often overshadowed by his predecessor Clifford Roberts, William H. 'Bill' Lane served as the second chairman of Augusta National. Appointed in 1976 at age 52, Roberts expected Lane to serve for decades. Lane, a successful CEO of Riviana Foods and an Augusta National member for 12 years, was known to be quiet but capable.

During his brief chairmanship, Lane navigated a scheduling conflict with the NFL, agreeing to move the 1979 Masters dates – an unprecedented step praised by the PGA Tour. He also appointed Arnold Palmer to conduct post-tournament interviews.

Tragically, just before the 1979 Masters, Lane (then 55) was hospitalized after experiencing dizziness and diagnosed with a cranial aneurysm. He was unable to fulfill his duties, with Vice Chairman Hord Hardin stepping in. Lane underwent surgery but never fully recovered to resume his role. Hardin became permanent chairman in April 1980, and Lane passed away just two months later in June 1980. His promising chairmanship was abruptly cut short, making him a poignant footnote in Masters history.
