Andrew Novak Eyes Masters Berth After Brilliant Round and Lucky Break at Valero Texas Open

Saturday at the Valero Texas Open tested the PGA Tour field with demanding, windy conditions. While many players struggled – including notable names carding high scores – Andrew Novak thrived, especially on the back nine where he recorded five birdies. His round of 69 was just one shot shy of the day's best score, posted by Tom Hoge.

The most talked-about moment came at the 16th. Novak admitted his 5-iron tee shot was poorly struck and pushed right by the wind. However, instead of finding trouble near the grandstands, the ball struck a structure and caromed back onto the putting surface, settling just five feet from the hole. He converted the putt for an unlikely birdie.

"Obviously not a great shot... I didn’t expect it to kick back and go on the green, that was obviously ridiculous," Novak commented post-round. "Not the best swing and sometimes golf rewards you.”

Leader Brian Harman, who managed an even-par round to maintain his lead, acknowledged the challenge posed by Novak and other chasers. Harman, recalling his own major-winning experience under pressure at the 2023 Open Championship, noted the hunger of the players behind him, setting the stage for a dramatic final round with a Masters invitation hanging in the balance.

He must win the Valero Texas Open. It is the final tournament offering an exemption into the Masters field for non-qualified players.

His tee shot went far right towards the grandstands, struck a structure, and bounced fortunately back onto the green, leading to a short birdie putt which he made.
