Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Clairemont Cafe: 14 People Sickened

San Diego County public health officials are actively investigating a salmonella outbreak traced to Aladdin Mediterranean Café in Clairemont. The outbreak, which began on April 25, 2025, has led to 14 confirmed and probable cases of salmonella infection. The affected individuals, ranging from 18 to 79 years old, experienced symptoms severe enough to require hospitalization in five instances. Aladdin Mediterranean Café voluntarily closed its doors upon notification of the outbreak to facilitate testing and staff interviews by health officials.

Salmonella infections, known as Salmonellosis, manifest through symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (potentially with blood or mucus), abdominal cramps, and fever. These symptoms typically emerge within 12 to 72 hours after consuming contaminated food. While most individuals recover without treatment within 4 to 7 days, the severity of the outbreak has prompted a thorough investigation.

The County's Public Health Services and Environmental Health and Quality Department are collaborating to identify the source of the outbreak. As of Monday, the county has reported 184 cases of Salmonellosis in 2025. Previous years saw 753 cases in 2024, 685 in 2023, and 683 in 2022, indicating a potential increase in cases this year.

Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever.

Illness from salmonella can last 4 to 7 days, with most people recovering without treatment.

The County’s Public Health Services and Environmental Health and Quality Department are conducting an investigation.
