Ebola Outbreak in DRC Intensifies Amid Attacks on Treatment Centers

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is facing significant challenges due to community resistance and attacks on healthcare facilities. These attacks stem from a combination of factors, including strict burial protocols that clash with local customs, misinformation, and a deep-seated mistrust of medical teams.

In the eastern DRC, it is customary for relatives and neighbors to gather at the home of the deceased to pay their last respects, often touching the body as a final act of farewell. However, the Congolese health ministry has emphasized that the bodies of Ebola victims remain highly contagious and must be handled only by trained teams in protective gear. This disconnect between cultural practices and medical protocols has fueled anger and resentment among communities.

The spread of misinformation and rumors has further exacerbated the situation. Some residents believe that Ebola is a business, leading to suspicion that healthcare providers are refusing to hand over bodies for nefarious purposes. This mistrust, combined with a decline in international aid, has stretched resources thin and overwhelmed treatment centers.

Efforts to contain the outbreak are also being hampered by patients fleeing treatment centers before completing care. This, along with the violence targeting healthcare facilities, could speed up the spread of the disease.

To address these challenges, authorities in Ituri and North Kivu are urging residents to practice good hygiene, maintain distance from the sick, cook food thoroughly, avoid self-medication, and trust response teams. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has placed 10 African countries on high alert, and cross-border coordination is being strengthened to improve surveillance, early warning systems, and response capacity.

Measures include promoting hygiene, limiting public gatherings, suspending wake services, banning the movement of bodies, and strengthening cross-border coordination.
