Nationwide Typhoid Vaccination Campaign Begins in Bangladesh

Why this matters: Typhoid fever remains a significant public health concern in Bangladesh due to poor sanitation and unsafe water. This campaign aims to reduce child morbidity and mortality from typhoid and curb antibiotic resistance associated with the disease.

The nationwide typhoid vaccination campaign is a crucial step towards improving public health in Bangladesh. Typhoid fever, caused by Salmonella Typhi, is prevalent in South Asia, accounting for nearly half of the world’s cases. The introduction of the Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine (TCV) into the national immunization program is expected to significantly reduce the burden of this disease.

The campaign is being conducted in two phases: the first phase in schools (October 13-30) and the second phase in designated community vaccination centers (November 1-13). Online registration is available, but offline registration options are also provided at vaccination points to ensure that all children have access to the vaccine.

Bangladesh is among the first countries to integrate TCV into its national immunization program, following successful pilot projects. The success of this campaign relies on the coordination between health workers, schools, and local authorities to reach all children, especially those in hard-to-reach rural areas.

All children aged between 9 months and 15 years are eligible.

Children without a birth certificate can still be registered with the help of health workers at the nearest vaccination center.

The campaign will continue until November 13, 2025.
