Memorial Day 2025: Honoring Fallen Soldiers

Memorial Day's origins trace back to 1868, initially dedicated to Union soldiers who died in the Civil War. The Grand Army of the Republic, led by Major General John A. Logan, established the holiday to decorate the graves of fallen comrades. Some accounts suggest even earlier tributes occurred, such as in Boalsburg, Pennsylvania (1864) and Charleston, South Carolina (1865), where Black freedmen and abolitionist allies honored Union soldiers.

The Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968 made Memorial Day a federal holiday observed on the last Monday in May. While it marks the beginning of summer for many, it remains a solemn occasion to remember and honor the sacrifices of those who died in service.

Memorial Day 2025 will be observed on Monday, May 26.
