DOJ Official Accused of Willingness to Violate Court Orders in Immigration Cases

A whistleblower complaint filed by former DOJ lawyer Erez Reuveni accuses Principal Associate Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove of suggesting that the Justice Department should disregard court orders related to immigration enforcement. The complaint details meetings where Bove allegedly discussed ways to circumvent legal scrutiny in implementing President Trump's Alien Enemies Act, an 18th-century law used to remove noncitizens with minimal due process.

According to Reuveni, Bove stated at a March 14 meeting that the department should consider telling judges "f--- you" and ignore court orders blocking deportations. Reuveni claims he was "stunned" by this suggestion, as it deviated from the DOJ's usual practice of advising clients to follow court orders.

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who was present at the meeting, has denied Reuveni's allegations, asserting that no one suggested a court order should be ignored. However, Senate Democrats plan to raise these allegations during Bove's confirmation hearing for a seat on the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

The allegations come amid scrutiny of the Trump administration's immigration policies and its repeated clashes with the judiciary. D.C. District Chief Judge James Boasberg has previously considered holding administration officials in contempt for violating an order to turn around a plane of deported immigrants. This situation underscores the tension between the executive branch's enforcement priorities and the judiciary's role in upholding legal standards.
