The Brazilian Father's Day

In Brazil, Father's Day emerged as a commercial initiative in 1953. Sylvio Bhering, a publicist and director at Globo, created a contest to honor fathers, awarding prizes to the father with the most children, the youngest father, and the oldest father. This marketing strategy aimed to stimulate retail sales between the Dia dos Namorados (Valentine's Day) in June and Dia das Crianças (Children's Day) in October.

The date was initially set on August 16, coinciding with Saint Joachim's Day in the Catholic Church, but was later moved to the second Sunday of August to align with Mother's Day celebrations. The Brazilian Association of Electronic Commerce (ABCE) projects that Father's Day will generate R$ 9.1 billion in e-commerce sales, a 14% increase compared to the previous year.

The American Father's Day

In contrast, Father's Day in the United States originated from a place of gratitude and admiration. In 1909, Sonora Louise Smart Dodd wanted to honor her father, a Civil War veteran who single-handedly raised her and her five siblings after their mother passed away. Inspired by a Mother's Day sermon, she advocated for a day to recognize fathers' contributions.

The first Father's Day celebration took place on June 19, 1910, in the state of Washington. Over time, the holiday gained popularity and was officially recognized as a national holiday in 1972.

Father's Day Around the World

Across the globe, Father's Day is celebrated in various ways, often linked to local customs and traditions. In Catholic countries like Portugal, Spain, and Italy, Father's Day is observed on March 19, coinciding with St. Joseph's Day, the adoptive father of Jesus.

In Russia, Father's Day is celebrated on February 23, along with Defender of the Fatherland Day, honoring both fathers and war heroes.

Other countries, including Greece, Norway, Australia, Canada, France, and South Africa, also have their unique Father's Day traditions, reflecting the diverse cultural values associated with fatherhood.
