Corgi Derby Crowns Juno Champion in Scotland

The Corgi Derby at Musselburgh Racecourse in Scotland has become an annual tradition since its inception in 2022, celebrating the breed favored by the late Queen Elizabeth II. This year, Juno emerged as the champion, triumphing over a field of sixteen competitors. The race, covering 230 feet, saw Juno come from behind to defeat Rodney, the previous year’s winner.

The event not only highlights the agility and charm of corgis but also serves as a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, who owned almost 30 corgis and dorgis (a corgi-dachshund mix) throughout her life. Her affection for the breed was well-known, with corgis often accompanying her on official tours and even appearing in a spoof video for the 2012 London Olympics.

Juno’s victory was celebrated with her owners, Alisdair Tew and Fran Brandon, receiving a trophy and dog treats from Judy Murray, the mother of tennis star Andy Murray. Tew humorously mentioned that Juno’s training involved chasing seagulls, indicating a playful approach to preparing for the derby. This lighthearted event brings joy to participants and spectators alike, honoring the Queen’s legacy and the delightful nature of corgis.

The Corgi Derby was first launched in 2022 to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee and to celebrate her favorite dog breed.
