Mets Sign MJ Melendez to Bolster Outfield Depth

MJ Melendez, once a top prospect as a catcher, transitioned to the outfield due to Salvador Perez's presence in Kansas City. While he showed promise in the minor leagues, his offensive production never translated consistently to the major league level.

The Mets are betting on a change of scenery and Melendez's potential to provide value as a versatile player. He offers depth in the outfield, particularly with prospect Carson Benge vying for a starting role. Melendez's ability to play first base and serve as an emergency catcher adds to his utility.

However, concerns remain about his offensive consistency and defensive capabilities. His career .215/.297/.388 slash line highlights his struggles at the plate. Despite a strong throwing arm, his defensive metrics in the outfield have been subpar.

Why This Matters: The Mets are taking a low-risk gamble on a player with upside. If Melendez can rediscover his offensive form, he could become a valuable asset. At a minimum, he provides depth and flexibility for a team looking to compete in a tough National League East division.

It's a one-year, $1.5 million deal with an additional $500,000 in incentives. The contract is split, meaning he'll earn a lower salary if he's in the minor leagues.
