'They Will Kill You' Review: A Gory, Eat-the-Rich Actioner

In 'They Will Kill You,' Asia (Zazie Beetz) arrives at the Virgil apartments, an exclusive Manhattan building, to rescue her sister Maria (Myha'la). However, the residents are Satan-worshippers who require a sacrifice. Asia, armed with weapons and fighting skills, must battle her way through the building, floor by floor. The film's plot is simple, allowing director Kirill Sokolov to create a pastiche of influences, from video games to anime to 'John Wick'. While the film may not have a distinctive style, it offers gleeful enthusiasm and plenty of mayhem.

Despite the film's endless appetite for violence and a trim run time, it starts to leave intriguing ideas on the table in favor of repeating itself. The layout of the building, themed after different deadly sins, is underexplored, and the characters lack depth. The film's haves-versus-have-nots posturing is less about exploring social injustice and more about allowing us to root for ultra-violence guilt-free.
