Their target is a massive heart-shaped diamond linked to a criminal syndicate led by Rosamund Pike's character. However, the original Horsemen soon reappear, leading to a team-up involving both generations against this new threat.

The decision to bring back Ruben Fleischer for a fourth installment underscores Lionsgate's satisfaction with his direction on the third film. Adam Fogelson, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair, praised Fleischer for delivering "all of the twists and turns and sleight-of-hand that audiences expect from this franchise while upping the stakes and scale." Fleischer himself noted the fun he had combining heist and magic elements and working with the cast.
