Hamill imagined a much darker backstory for Luke, involving the loss of his wife and child in a tragic accident involving a lightsaber. This personal canon was Hamill's way of justifying Luke's transformation into a 'suicidal hermit.' Despite these creative differences, Hamill emphasized his respect for Johnson and his commitment to making Johnson's screenplay work. He also addressed fan comments suggesting a feud, stating that nothing could be further from the truth.

While Hamill initially disagreed with some of Johnson's choices, he ultimately respected Johnson's vision and committed to the role.
