Tom Petty's journey wasn't always smooth. While 'American Girl' remained a live staple and a source of joy, other songs presented challenges.
'American Girl': The song's enduring appeal lay in its energetic performance and simple yet effective structure. Petty himself acknowledged the excitement it generated, even after decades of playing it.
'Out in the Cold': During the making of *Into the Great Wide Open*, Petty collaborated with Jeff Lynne, but struggled to recapture the magic of *Full Moon Fever*. 'Out in the Cold' was one such instance, with Petty expressing dissatisfaction with the lyrics and overall outcome. He felt it shouldn't have been one of the 2 songs getting airplay. Drummer Stan Lynch also felt alienated during these sessions, which relied heavily on overdubs.
'Travelin': This rockabilly tune was met with outright disdain from the Heartbreakers. The band were not happy after Petty told them he could fit in another Heartbreakers album while making a record with The Traveling Wilburys. This highlighted the growing pains and creative friction within the group, marking a shift towards Petty's evolving solo work and rawer sonic landscapes.
