The catalyst for his involvement came in December 2023 when he joined Gaugh and Wilson for a benefit concert, coincidentally at the age his father passed away. The rehearsal, where Gaugh noted Jakob's voice sounded "identical to Brad's," solidified the decision to move forward.

"Until the Sun Explodes" was recorded with Jakobs Castle producer Jon Joseph at Harbor Martyr Studios in San Pedro. The album expands the Sublime lineup with guitarists Trey Pangborn and Zane "Zayno" Vandevort and DJ Product (Doug Boyce). It also features guest appearances from notable artists like H.R. of Bad Brains, Garrett "G. Love" Dutton, and Fletcher Dragge from Pennywise, among others. Jakob emphasizes that the album embodies Sublime's core identity as a "California punk rock band that experimented with many different genres," drawing from reggae, dub, and 90s hip-hop, all filtered through a "messy and frenetic" punk sensibility.

Despite the excitement, Jakob Nowell suggests "Until the Sun Explodes" might be his final album with Sublime, viewing it as an "epilogue, the victory lap, a celebration of Sublime’s history." While he intends to play a few Sublime shows annually, his primary focus will return to Jakobs Castle and SVNBVRNT Records, a label dedicated to nurturing new Southern California artists. This decision reflects a desire to honor his father's legacy by supporting the next generation of musicians inspired by Sublime's independent spirit.

The band has a robust touring schedule planned for 2026, including stops at Petco Park, their own Sublime Festival in Portland, Vans Warped Tour, Louder Than Life, and the Aftershock Festival, culminating in the Sublime Reef Madness Cruise in November.
