Another Newark Airport Air Traffic Control Outage Causes Disruptions

Newark Liberty International Airport, one of the busiest airports in the United States, has been under scrutiny due to recent air traffic control issues. This outage follows a similar incident on April 28, where air traffic control computer screens went dark, preventing controllers from communicating with aircraft. The FAA has attributed the problem to a telecommunications outage affecting the Philadelphia TRACON Area C, which manages air traffic in and out of Newark.

The ongoing issues have prompted calls for immediate action to address staffing shortages and modernize the air traffic control infrastructure. Congressman Josh Gottheimer emphasized the importance of Newark Airport to the regional economy, noting that 20% of America's GDP runs through the region. He urged the FAA to move more air traffic controllers to the short-staffed region and provide necessary bonuses and overtime pay.

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby acknowledged the impact of the technology failure, stating that it resulted in numerous diverted flights, delays, and cancellations. To mitigate further disruptions, United is canceling 35 round-trip flights per day from its Newark schedule. American Airlines also reported that its customers have been affected by the challenges in Newark, underscoring the need for urgent improvements to the air traffic control system.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced a plan for sweeping upgrades to America's air traffic control system, which could take three to four years to complete and cost around $15 billion. The plan includes incorporating fiber, wireless, and satellite technology. However, these upgrades would need to be implemented while the old system remains in use, posing additional challenges.
