The crisis began when a 34,000-gallon storage tank at GKN Aerospace, containing methyl methacrylate (MMA), overheated. MMA is a toxic and flammable liquid used in acrylic plastics manufacturing. The primary concern was the potential for the tank to either explode or rupture, releasing harmful chemicals into the surrounding areas.

Firefighters and hazardous materials teams worked continuously to cool the tank and assess the situation. The discovery of a crack in the tank offered a silver lining, as it allowed pressure to release, mitigating the explosion risk.
