Fraud Scams: A Growing Threat

Fraud scams in Canada are becoming more prevalent and sophisticated, leading to significant financial losses for victims. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) reports that Canadians lost a staggering $638 million to scams. In Alberta, scams have evolved, with fewer victims losing more money. This indicates that scammers are targeting individuals with greater resources or employing more convincing tactics.

One common tactic involves scammers preying on fear and emotion, as illustrated by the experience of Sydnie Bourassa, who lost $15,000 to a scam. Bourassa received a phone call with an automated message claiming there was a warrant for her arrest. The scammers then guided her through a series of steps to withdraw and deposit her money into a Bitcoin account, isolating her from friends, family, and her bank.

The Calgary Police Service (CPS) notes that recovering funds lost to scams is increasingly difficult. Scammers often request payment via gift cards, which are harder to trace. Advances in technology, including AI, have also made romance scams more effective, allowing scammers to manipulate multiple victims simultaneously through emotional deception.

To combat these threats, SAIT sent out emails to students to simulate phishing scams. Students who clicked the link were enrolled in cybersecurity training. Phishing remains a top cybersecurity threat, highlighting the need for ongoing vigilance and education.

Southwest Airlines' Policy Change

Starting January 27, 2026, Southwest Airlines will implement a new policy regarding plus-size passengers. Passengers who require additional seating space will need to proactively purchase the needed number of seats prior to travel. This policy aims to ensure that an adjacent seat is available.

The airline's website provides seat width dimensions for its Boeing 737 models, ranging from 15.5 inches to 17.8 inches. Passengers who purchase an extra seat may be eligible for a refund if the flight departs with at least one open seat and both seats are the same fare class. Refund requests must be made within 90 days of the flight date.

This change has raised concerns among plus-size travelers, with some fearing increased anxiety and potential difficulties if flights are sold out. Jeff Jenkins, founder of plus-size travel blog Chubby Diaries, expressed concern that potential customers might avoid flying with Southwest due to the uncertainty of seat availability. Southwest states that this change is to prepare their operation, Employees, and Customers for assigned seating.

Be wary of unsolicited calls or messages, especially those requesting urgent action or personal information. Verify the identity of the caller or sender independently. Never share personal or financial information with unknown parties.
