Atlanta CDC Shooting: Officer Killed, Suspect Identified

The shooting unfolded around 4:50 p.m. on August 8 near the CDC Atlanta campus and Emory Point shopping area. Officer David Rose was the first to respond and was immediately met with gunfire. Witnesses reported that White fired toward multiple CDC buildings before entering a CVS store, where a gunfight ensued on the second floor.

Patrick Joseph White, identified as the suspect, had reportedly been turned away from the CDC headquarters before the shooting. Sources indicate that White blamed the COVID-19 vaccine for his health issues and mental state. This grievance may have motivated the attack, though law enforcement has not confirmed a motive.

The incident prompted a large-scale response from multiple law enforcement agencies, including Atlanta Police, DeKalb County Police, Emory Police, Georgia State Patrol, FBI, GBI, ATF, Gwinnett County Police, Brookhaven Police, Chamblee Police, Dunwoody Police, and the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office. Emory University Hospital and campus buildings were placed on lockdown, and children at the CDC daycare were safely evacuated.

Following the shooting, the CDC instructed its employees to work remotely while a security assessment is conducted. The GBI is leading the investigation, which is expected to take an extended period of time due to the complex scene and extensive evidence.
