Florida Deputy Killed, Another Injured Serving Eviction Notice

The shooting unfolded as deputies attempted to serve an eviction notice to Michael Halberstam, who had a history of narcotics and misdemeanor assault charges. According to Sheriff Eric Flowers, Halberstam retrieved a weapon and began firing indiscriminately at the deputies and locksmith upon entry. The injured were transported to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce.

This event marks the second line-of-duty death in the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office’s 100-year history. The community is in mourning, and support services have been activated for the affected families and sheriff's office personnel.

Halberstam had been posting negative comments about the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office on his Facebook page and had recently been fired from UPS, raising concerns about his state of mind.
