New Orleans: Driver Arrested After Bourbon Street Hit-and-Run Injures Officer and Deputy

On July 18, 2025, shortly before midnight, officers from the French Quarter Task Force witnessed a Chevrolet Camaro performing "doughnuts" near the intersection of Bourbon and Conti streets. When the officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver, identified as Mark Hunter Jr., accelerated and intentionally struck both a New Orleans police officer and an Orleans Parish deputy.

The officer was transported to the hospital by New Orleans EMS and is currently listed in stable condition, although initial reports indicated serious head injuries. The deputy was treated at the scene by EMS and NOPD officers trained in emergency medical response.

Hunter fled the scene in the Camaro, leading officers on a chase to a parking garage in the 300 block of Canal Street, where he was apprehended. He was also taken to the hospital for injuries sustained during the incident and will be booked into Central Lockup upon medical clearance.

Jail records indicate Hunter faces numerous charges, including two counts of attempted second-degree murder, aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon, obstruction of justice, resisting a police officer with force, three counts of reckless operation of a vehicle, six counts of hit-and-run driving, one count of hit-and-run driving with no death or serious injury, and three counts of driving with a suspended license.

The Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office released a statement expressing their support for the injured officer and condemning the reckless actions.

Hunter faces charges including attempted second-degree murder, aggravated assault, obstruction of justice, and multiple traffic violations.

The incident occurred on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter of New Orleans, near the intersection of Bourbon and Conti streets.
