Police Investigate 'Shooter' Reports at UVA

On November 3, 2025, the University of Virginia Police Department (UVAPD) responded to initial reports of an active shooter near Shannon Library, prompting an immediate emergency alert to students and faculty. The UVAPD quickly mobilized, conducting a thorough sweep of the area.

However, within approximately 30 minutes, the UVAPD issued a follow-up statement indicating they had found no evidence of an active shooter. Despite this, the University maintained a heightened state of alert, advising individuals to continue following the "RUN, HIDE, FIGHT" protocol, a standard emergency procedure for active attacker situations. Academic buildings were placed under keycard access control, limiting entry to authorized personnel. This measure aimed to enhance security and prevent unauthorized access during the ongoing investigation.

The incident marks the first time since February 27th that UVA has issued a "RUN, HIDE, FIGHT" message, when a similar alert was sent out following reports of an active knife attacker near Alumni Hall.

It is a standard protocol for active shooter situations, advising people to first run if possible, then hide if running isn't an option, and finally fight as a last resort.

The University likely issued the alert out of an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of students and staff, given the initial reports.
