San Marcos Murder and Arson Suspect to Undergo Competency Evaluation

The Austins were found dead in their Lacebark Street home after firefighters responded to a fire. Alvarado, who was renting a room from the couple, was arrested and charged with murder and arson. The couple's dog also died in the fire. A GoFundMe page was created to support the family.

The District Attorney's office is advocating for changes to the mental health diversion law, arguing that it needs to be better balanced with public safety concerns. They are supporting legislation that would give prosecutors more legal grounds to object to diversion plans.
