Third Defendant Pleads Guilty in Sam Nordquist Torture and Murder Case

Background of the Case

Sam Nordquist, 24, traveled from Oakdale, Minnesota, to the Finger Lakes region of New York in September 2024 and took up residence at Patty's Lodge in Hopewell. Over several weeks, authorities say Nordquist was subjected to an escalating pattern of abuse involving physical beatings, sexual assault, and psychological torment.

In court on Wednesday, Quijano admitted under questioning by prosecutors that her actions — including beating, kicking, and sexually assaulting Nordquist — directly caused his death. She further admitted that the acts were committed for the gratification of herself and others. She also confessed to participating in concealing Nordquist's body after his death.

Defense attorney Neil Gunther noted that Quijano voluntarily approached police early in the investigation and disclosed her involvement. "I think Ms. Quijano was remorseful from the beginning," Gunther said outside court.

Nordquist's mother Linda and sister Kayla were present in the packed courtroom. Speaking to reporters afterward, Kayla Nordquist expressed profound grief and frustration: "I think of Sam crying and screaming and begging for help, and no one was helping him. She added that she does not believe any sentence will constitute true justice: "There's nothing they can say, there's nothing they could do that would bring him back, and there's just no justice."

Assistant District Attorney James Nobles noted that the guilty pleas are creating momentum in the case. "When people start pleading guilty, I think that causes some momentum," he said. "There also is pressure from the federal investigation that would cause people to plead guilty here."
