Walmart Store's Self-Checkout Removal Leads to Significant Shoplifting Decrease

In April 2024, the Walmart in Shrewsbury, Missouri, removed its self-checkout lanes due to rampant shoplifting. According to the Webster-Kirkwood Times, prior to this change, many individuals were bagging items at self-checkouts without paying. Shrewsbury Police Chief Lisa Vargas reported to city officials that this action led to a significant drop in police calls and arrests at the store.

From January to May 2024, the Shrewsbury Police Department responded to 1,915 calls, with 509 originating from Walmart. In the same period in 2025, total calls decreased to 1,662, with only 183 from Walmart. Custodial arrests also fell from 108 to 49 at the Walmart location.

While this strategy proved successful in Shrewsbury, Walmart's Director of Global Affairs, Charles Crowson, stated that the company has no current plans to remove self-checkouts from other locations. Adjustments to store layouts and checkout experiences are based on various factors, including customer feedback, shopping patterns, and local business needs.
