ADL Report Cards Show Campus Antisemitism Grades Improving

The ADL's report card project has faced criticism for being oversimplified, but universities are taking it seriously, with 89% engaging with the ADL during the assessment process. Schools with strong policies and proactive measures to address antisemitism tend to receive higher grades. For example, UCLA rose from a D to a B after Chancellor Julio Frenk highlighted their efforts to combat antisemitism. Conversely, schools with frequent antisemitic incidents and a lack of clear policies, like The New School, continue to struggle. Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the ADL, noted that maintaining a safe campus climate is a matter of will, with the strongest gains coming from institutions that have deeply engaged with recommendations and translated them into lasting institutional practice.

While some Jewish campus groups find the report cards helpful, others believe they make their relationships with campuses more difficult. The ADL acknowledges these mixed reactions and sees itself as playing a 'bad cop' role in pushing universities to take antisemitism concerns more seriously.

It's important to note that the ADL grades reflect a specific point in time and may not capture recent changes or initiatives. For instance, Florida International University maintained an A grade despite a recently revealed group chat with antisemitic language, as the information came too late to be reflected in the grades.
