Durango Adult Education Center Braces for Staff Cuts

The Durango Adult Education Center, founded in 1987, faces a precarious future due to recent federal budget cuts. The federal budget reconciliation bill, signed into law, directly impacts two critical federal grants that support the center’s English language and basic adult education programs. The loss of these grants will result in an estimated $400,000 reduction in funding, primarily affecting teacher salaries.

This situation is further aggravated by the lack of state support this year. Previously, the center received significant funding through state-administered grants, but those funds have been significantly reduced. The center's director, Susan Hakanson, noted that despite a successful year with student outcomes, they received no state funding this year.

The center will attempt to secure funding from private donors and organizations; however, it's unlikely they will be able to compensate for the loss of nearly half a million dollars in federal funding. Many other regional nonprofits are experiencing similar funding losses, increasing competition for supplemental funding.
