Durham Elementary School Principal Resigns After Indictment

Dr. Tounya Wright’s resignation follows an indictment connected to an incident in November 2024. The investigation revealed that Wright and two other administrators were allegedly not forthcoming regarding the event where a student was reportedly tied to a chair. Wright’s indictment includes three counts of felony obstruction of justice and one count of perjury, leading to her resignation effective January 31st. Two other administrators, Tanya Janique Giovanni and Ayesha Hunter, also face similar obstruction charges. All three individuals had been on paid suspended leave since mid-December. The Durham Police Department executed search warrants at the district office in December as part of their investigation. This situation raises concerns about the handling of child abuse investigations within the Durham Public School system and the accountability of school administrators.
