MacKenzie Scott’s recent donations to HBCUs mark a significant step towards addressing historical inequities in funding. Long underfunded by the federal government due to systemic racial inequality, HBCUs have often struggled to provide adequate resources for their students. Scott’s unrestricted gifts provide these institutions with the flexibility to allocate funds where they are most needed.

Bowie State University, for example, plans to use its $50 million donation to enhance financial aid and research efforts. With annual undergraduate tuition and fees at $8,999, Bowie State is already one of the most affordable universities, but the additional funds will help close the financial gap for many students. Similarly, Norfolk State University in Virginia plans to use its $50 million gift to propel the institution to its next level of excellence.

These donations not only benefit current students but also promise to uplift future generations. As Bowie State University President Aminta Breaux noted, the gift empowers the university to expand access, elevate research and academic excellence, and uplift generations of students who will lead, serve, and innovate.
