Prince George's County Schools Face Budget Cuts

Prince George's County Public Schools are facing a confluence of challenges, including a significant budget deficit and inclement weather conditions. The proposed $150 million budget cut stems from rising operational costs, required compensation agreements, and changes in state funding formulas. To address the shortfall, PGCPS is considering eliminating or phasing out several specialty programs, including language immersion programs at the elementary and middle school levels.

Parents and educators have voiced strong opposition to these proposed cuts, particularly the elimination of language immersion programs. These programs, such as the Chinese Immersion program at Paint Branch Elementary, provide students with valuable language skills and cultural experiences. The transition to a basic language model with fewer hours of instruction raises concerns about the quality of language education in the district.

In addition to the budget challenges, PGCPS is also dealing with winter weather conditions. A recent winter storm has prompted the school system to close for in-person learning and implement virtual instruction on a two-hour delayed schedule. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning, with expected snow accumulations between 5 and 10 inches.
