UVA President Jim Ryan Faces DOJ Pressure Over DEI Compliance

The controversy began when the New York Times reported that the DOJ claimed Ryan had not been fully complying with an executive order to remove DEI programs. For instance, UVA renamed its Equity Center as the Center for Community Partnerships, which critics argue is merely a superficial change. Conservative groups, such as the Jefferson Council, have long criticized Ryan’s leadership, while others, like Wahoos4UVa, support him. America First Legal, founded by Stephen Miller, also sent a letter to the DOJ outlining how it claimed UVA was violating the law, suggesting that instead of removing DEI programs, UVA has simply renamed them. In March, the university’s governing Board of Visitors voted to dissolve its DEI office after the Trump administration threatened to withhold federal funding to schools that continued to support such programs.
