Badar Khan Suri, an Indian national and Georgetown researcher, was arrested outside his home and detained by ICE based on accusations of spreading Hamas propaganda on social media. Despite never being charged with a crime, he spent months in detention, separated from his wife and three children.
During his detention, Suri made efforts to maintain a connection with his children. He told his younger twins that he was lost in the clouds, while trying to bring humor into his conversations with his eldest son, describing the facilities as having a PlayStation 4, basketball court and a soccer field.
Suri's case gained attention, and a judge eventually ruled that his detention violated his First Amendment right to free speech and Fifth Amendment right to due process. He has since been reunited with his family and is rebuilding his life.
The experience has changed his perspective, and he is now focused on rebuilding his journey with meaning and truth. He also acknowledges the change in the family dynamic and is working to regain his role as a provider and protector.
