On April 12, 2019, Landen Hoffmann's life changed drastically when Emmanuel Aranda threw him from a third-floor balcony at the Mall of America. The fall resulted in severe injuries, including a broken skull, facial bones, arms, and a leg. Aranda, who admitted to 'looking for someone to kill' due to anger from being rejected by women, was quickly apprehended and later sentenced to 19 years in prison.
Landen's recovery was a long and arduous process, taking over three years. His mother, Kari Hoffmann, witnessed significant personality changes in her son as he recovered from a frontal lobe injury. Despite the challenges, Landen underwent more than a dozen surgeries and extensive physical rehabilitation.
Kari Hoffmann's book, 'Miracle at the Mall,' chronicles their journey and highlights the role of faith and support from the community. The family has chosen to focus on the positive aspects of Landen's recovery, with Landen himself embracing his story and telling others that 'God saved me, God's real.'
While Landen doesn't remember the fall, his family has not returned to the Mall of America since the incident. Kari focuses on gratitude for her son's life and well-being.
